Information: To make “Oak Cross”, our new malt whisky, we begin by choosing complementary Highland malt whiskies, led by the delicate, sweet, lightly malty nature of Teaninich, from the village of Alness.
For complexity and balance we add malts from other distilleries from the villages of Brora (for fruitiness) and Carron (for weight). All the whiskies are approximately ten years of age and have matured in a mix of types of American oak casks.
We vat the whiskies together in our stainless steel tank and then put the whiskies back into casks to marry. But, importantly, some of these marrying casks include French oak.
Because the flavours of new French oak can make a big impression on a whisky, and because we were aiming for a medium-weight style of whisky, we had our coopers create casks made of new French oak heads and American oak bodies. This made the balance of flavours just right!
Type: Vatted Malt Scotch Whisky
Lead Distilleries: Made entirely of Highland single malt whiskies led by Teaninich and balanced with malts from other distilleries from the villages of Brora (for fruitiness) and Carron (for weight). All the whiskies are aged approximately 10 years-old.
Wood: All the whiskies are aged for their primary maturation in a mix of American oak cask types. The marrying casks are a mix of first-fill Bourbon barrels and our proprietary “Oak Cross” casks made of American and new French oaks..
Tasting Notes: A soft palate, with flavour notes of clove and vanilla, accenting a sweet maltiness and subtle fruit character. It’s medium weight, with a long finish echoing hints of vanilla and clove.
Bottling Details: Bottled at 43%. Not chill filtered. Natural colour. Guard filtered through a six-micron filter.

When people ask me what I love about the whisky business, there is always one image I describe. It’s the image--and the aromas that go with it--of a whisky warehouse. Have you ever been in a whisky warehouse? I love being inside them. These are the places where casks and casks of whisky lay maturing. Whisky warehouses have this heady, great aroma. I just love it: you smell the wood from the casks and all sorts of fruity compounds evaporating off the whisky into the air--it all sort of rolls into you like a cloud as you enter the warehouse. I guess it’s more a “bouquet” than simply an aroma, because it’s so complex, comprised of so many different, complementary aromas.
